The photo above is a transmission pan we removed here at Lee Myles AutoCare in Hazlet, NJ. What you're looking at is the result of transmission fluid that was never serviced — dark, sludgy buildup that coats the internal components of the transmission and prevents them from doing their job. This vehicle, a Chevrolet Silverado, required a full transmission rebuild. It did not have to get to that point.

Transmission fluid breaks down over time. Heat, friction, and normal driving wear degrade the fluid's ability to lubricate and protect the hundreds of moving parts inside your transmission. When fluid goes too long without being serviced, it loses its protective properties and begins to break down into the dark, contaminated sludge you see here. The damage is gradual — which is exactly why so many drivers don't notice it until something goes wrong. By the time you feel the car slipping between gears, shuddering on acceleration, or smell something burning after highway driving, the damage is often already significant.

The good news is that transmission problems caught early are almost always far less expensive to address. Transmission service — which can include a fluid drain and fill, filter replacement, or other maintenance depending on your vehicle and transmission type — is routine preventive care. A transmission rebuild or replacement, on the other hand, is a major repair. The cost difference between staying on top of service versus waiting until failure is significant, and in many cases the failure is entirely avoidable. Our certified technicians at Lee Myles will evaluate your specific vehicle and transmission type and recommend the right service interval and approach for your car.
